The Doomsday Clock (with a capital D) shows us how close we are to "the end". Pictured here is the Doomsday Clock is happier times (2002 - 2007).
As of now, we're 5 minutes to midnight. Will we get closer or further from midnight?
You can watch a copy of the clock move live tomorrow morning. Yes, a copy. The actual clock is in Chicago, while the press conference will be in New York City. Allowing the doomsday clock itself to travel to New York City could be very bad - anything could happen to it (scientists who are superstitious - hmmm). So the copy will have to do.
It's been three years since the clock has moved (back in January of 2007, we were seven minutes from midnight). With December 21, 2012 getting closer, I've got to wonder if that will influence the clock's latest move.
At one point (from 1991 - 1995), we were seventeen minutes to midnight. That's the earliest the clock has ever been! After that, we've just been getting closer and closer to midnight.
If you're wondering who decides the time on the Doomsday Clock, that would be a group of atomic scientists based in Chicago. I hope they wake up in a good mood tomorrow.
